The Lungs

Our lungs have an outer surface of about 1m2, the inner surface measures approximately 300m2 and is exposed to changing environmental influences constantly by our breathing to which they must respond . In the healthy lung inhaled bacteria, viruses, pollen and dust are continuously transported by the cilia on the lung surface (epithelial cells) into the esophagus and the stomach and excreted. In the diseased lung to inhaled particles dissolve out an inflammatory response, and they change the structure of the airways (bronchi). While you can control the inflammatory response well with drugs there is today no means that the tissue changes of the airways prevents or cures.
